Defeat the bedroom tax!

29 Aug

Our post of 12th August reported that a Council official was coming to visit Veronica Kenning of Shard End on the 22nd August, regarding her non-payment of the Bedroom tax. Well, the visit has come and gone but nothing has changed, except she faces court action in 5 -7 weeks’ time.
Veronica, 57, was adamant that she would not pay, and she still is. This is a moral stance for her, on behalf of the many others who find themselves in a terrible situation because of this unjust tax.
Since she was sent a letter on the 27th February 2013 telling her to pay £23.57 extra a week bedroom tax, she has found her situation severely traumatic. Not only is she disabled, but is dying of cancer. And now she has all this to worry about on top.
The statement she gave to the Council visitor made several points clear;  that she would not pay, her bad health situation, why she was not paying, how she would fight (including going to court) and how if she were to be found guilty she would sit outside the court to die. She does not plan to sit at home waiting for the bailiffs to drag her out of her family home.
Veronica said this afternoon, “It is disgraceful, you can’t treat people like this. I am disgusted. If they get away with this in Birmingham, they can get away with it anywhere. I am not political, but I think none of the politicians are for us. We want to keep our homes, no matter what party you are.”

See an exert from our chat this afternoon

Surely, in the interests of compassion and humanity, she should be allowed to spend the last few months of her life in dignity in her family home. And  all others in a similar plight should be left alone.
This terrible tax has to be withdrawn, but that will be made more likely if people follow Veronica’s brave stance and refuse to cooperate. And that includes the Labour politicians that control the city council.
If you are affected in a similar way, or you know of someone, then give us a call on 07582 610 944.
And of course anyone can write to their Councillor, the leader of the Council and the papers asking for reason and justice to prevail, for Veronica and everyone else’s sake.

This post drives home the tragic and human cost of the bedroom tax. I really don’t know how Veronica is going cope with the imminent court case and her illness. She must be experiencing a horrendous level of stress.

I am sure that you are all being very kind to Veronica. I wonder if there is anything she needs on a practical level? I know cancer patients feel the cold – would she like an extra duvet? Maybe there’s a CD she would like?

I feel that it is absolutely essential that there is always support available to Veronica. You could maybe mention the Samaritans to her. They are there for everyone, not just those who are suicidal. They now provide a
listening ear to anyone who is in need.

We are all thinking of you, Veronica.

Reblogged this on Birmingham Against The Cuts and commented:
The Bedroom Tax is one of the worst policies ever – failing at a technical level as the housing benefit bill rises – – doing so badly that even Conservative Party Councillors have voted to support a motion that the charge should be scrapped –

This story is about the failure at the human level of the charge – Veronica Kenning, resident of Shard End, unable to pay the tax, suffering from terminal cancer and not willing to move as she faces the final few months of her life. This is the unfair, unjust side of the bedroom tax – it is a failure of a policy at a financial, technical, human and moral level and needs to be scrapped now.

Disgusting. We are ready for another war with syria. Already fighting meaningless war with afg and iraq . BUT we cant support our owen people. Every day you hear a story which is humiliating us on worldwide basis. I demand justice for this lady. And the council should think again who they are taking action against. GUTTED.

Khalid your comment just about sums up the attitudes of the politicians running (ruining) our country.
Greedy millionaires looking to make more misery not just in UK but on an international level.. “we’re all in this together”? Let’s join together and rid ourselves of corrupt power hungry idiots and get behind Veronica and her quest to stand against the Bedroom Tax
